The benefits of raw dog food

Your dog is part of the family, so it's no surprise that you want to find the most nutritional food for them. This is where a raw food diet can come in.

These are some of the top benefits for your doggo:

Firm poos

Raw food is high in protein and rich in fibre; this helps feed and nurture the range of bacteria in your dog’s gut known as the microbiome. Foods such as offal, bone and veggies provide natural prebiotic fibres that lower inflammation and strengthen the immune system.

Fibre helps to absorb water, making your dog’s poo firmer and easier to pass. For you, this means less smelly, less frequent poos that are easier to pick up. For your dog, firmer poos also help prevent blocked anal glands.

Energy

The high-quality proteins found in raw provide sustainable energy. Beef, chicken and lamb are abundant in B vitamins, like B12, which help convert food into energy and support the health of blood and nerve cells. Proteins like turkey and salmon are rich in tryptophan, which promotes better sleep.

A raw diet, filled with nutrient-packed veg and fruits, can keep your dog energised throughout the day and relaxed during rest periods. In contrast, processed dry foods, which are high in carbs, convert into sugar in the body. This leads to insulin spikes and fluctuating energy levels.

Fresh breath

Feeding dogs raw leads to better dental hygiene and fresher breath.

This is because raw food has fewer carbohydrates and sugars compared to dry biscuit, which can cause plaque and tartar build-up that’s linked to gum disease and tooth decay.

Healthy coat

Nutrients, like omega-3 and 6, can keep your dog’s coat shiny. These essential fatty acids and key amino acids in high-quality meat and fish will help your dog maintain healthy skin and coat.

Gut health

Raw food diets are excellent for enhancing your dog's digestive health. They are easier to digest, allowing your dog to absorb all the necessary nutrients.

This can aid in defending against environmental allergens and boosts the immune system.

These allergies stem from reactions to various things like mites or pollen, leading to symptoms such as itching, ear infections, flaky skin, hair loss, and excessive chewing of their paws or skin.

Healthy weight

A high protein, low carb diet can help your dog maintain a healthy weight and muscle mass.

The refined carbs in biscuit can increase increase fat storage and can result in weight gain.

That's why your dog needs a balance of protein, fibre, healthy fats, vits and minerals to help their body function properly; storing less body fat and maintaining good lean muscle.

Joint health

A raw diet contains meat, raw bone and connective tissues, too. All of these are fantastic sources of calcium, glucosamine and chondroitin. These help to keep your dog's joints strong and healthy as they get older.

Longer, healthier life!

Keeping all of this in mind then, it's easy to see why switching to a raw diet, including nutritional fruits and veg, is beneficial to our doggo's health! If raw feeding isn't for you, then try adding gently cooked or steamed veg or fruit to your dog's usual meals to increase intake of vits, minerals and antioxidants!
